Case Story: Ambulance for the Kanyama Health Centre, Malawi

Sector: Healthcare

Project: co-funding of an ambulance

Location: Kanyama, Malawi

Malawi

In the remote, mountainous region of Kanyama, Malawi, one small clinic stands as the only option for medical healthcare for hundreds. With the nearest hospital over 20 km away and no proper roads, reaching medical care has been a daily struggle for several rural communities nearby.

Many families cannot afford the long journey to the main hospital and too often, lives have been lost before help could arrive. Kanyama Health Centre, despite overwhelming odds, has remained a vital lifeline. Serving patients from rural communities, some traveling several kilometers on foot, the clinic has provided care where no one else could. But without an ambulance, emergencies too often ended in tragedy.

In 2023, the Bishop of Dedza reached out to Missio Malta to ask for help. The need was urgent, without an ambulance, too many lives in Kanyama were being lost simply because they couldn’t reach care in time. Missio Malta, together with MIVA Austria and the local community came together and founded and delivered an ambulance to Kanyama Health Centre.

Today, that ambulance is on the move daily, navigating rough mountain paths to reach the sick, transport patients in crisis, and give people a fighting chance at life.
