Pope Francis has declared October 2019 to be an Extraordinary Month of Mission (EMM2019), being 100 years anniversary since Pope Benedict XV’s Apostolic Letter Maximum Illud. This Apostolical letter highlighted the oneness of humanity, a message well timed and needed for humanity, since it was written in the midst of WW1 and in a time of rise of separation due to nationalism.
This year’s theme is Baptised and Sent: The Church of Christ on a Mission in the World. As the Pope’s official charity for overseas mission, Missio enables Catholics in Malta and Gozo to live out the call they received at Baptism: to share in the church’s universal mission of the taking action to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with all people
Internationally for 2019, action is put into an educational project in Myanmar: The Healing of a Nation. The project will support children’s education in Myanmar by building a farm to sustain the school, training of new teachers amongst others.
Locally, World Mission Sunday will be held on the 20th October 2019 in Hamrun Church, San Gaetano and churches around the Maltese Islands where mass will be celebrated and prayers offered to these mission countries.
