World Mission Sunday – 23rd October
Help build brighter futures for communities in Ethiopia this World Mission Month.
This October, we are celebrating World Mission Month, a month dedicated to the life-giving work of missionaries around the world. Listen to Missionaries around the world in the video below:
This year, Missio around the world is supporting the Church of Ethiopia and the local communities towards providing life-changing opportunities to those most in need.
Pope Francis, in his 2022 World Mission Sunday message, invites everyone to answer the call to be missionary, sharing that “Mission is carried out together, not individually…”
This years message is inspired from Acts 1:8
“you shall be my witnesses”,
that every Christian is called to be a missionary and witness to Christ.
To respond. To serve.
Through the Pontifical Mission Societies’ international network, with our supporters, we are answering the call to help build brighter futures. Working at a grass-roots level and closely collaborating with the local communities, we aim to find sustainable solutions which will bring hope to those in most need.
We are currently supporting a range of mission development programs in Ethiopia addressing malnutrition through goat farms and the vulnerable position of women in society.
One way of being witness to Christ Jesus this mission month is by supporting these communities and make a life-changing difference for families in need.
Locally, the Archbishop Mons Charles Jude Scicluna will celebrate Mission Month Mass on Sunday 23rd October at 09:30am from Mosta Basilica and broadcasted on TVM and Missio Malta Facebook page
Bring hope to families in Ethiopia!
Deberety Goat Rearing Centre in Ethiopia
In a community in Emdibir in Ethiopia where opportunities for skills training and employment are scarce and where 70 percent of families struggle to put food on their tables we are working towards providing them with a sustainable source of nutrition by building a goat rearing centre as an expansion to the current Deberety Farm. Fr Habte, the priest responsible for the community, and the Church are working to provide nutritious milk to families in need to include agricultural skills training and employment.
In Emdibir, women suffer from inequality, lack of opportunities for education and jobs, which result in mass migration, average of 200,000 women per year effecting their stability and health, both emotional and phycological.
See Some facts about women in Ethiopia below!
Those women who remain in Ethiopia like Neela* , the woman in the photo above, worries deeply for her children, especially baby Ajani* due to malnutrition and lack of stability. She starts each day unsure of how she will provide for her family, a reality that, alarmingly, is not hers alone.
Establishing the Goat Rearing Centre means that families like Neela can access much needed support for her family, and that health problems like malnutrition are less likely to impact young children and babies like Ajani. This project will help in supply of food and training in agriculture to grow their own food.
However, this project is only possible with the partnership and support of people like you.

This year’s World Mission Day message is inspired from Acts 1:8, “you shall be my witnesses”, that every Christian is called to be a missionary and witness to Christ. This means we respond to others needs and act by serving each other.
By supporting these communities, you are being a witness of Jesus Christ. Will you walk with these communities and support the missionaries who help them? You can do so on the donate button on the left hand side.

BE A WITNESS TO MARIA’S MISSION
“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” African Proverb.
We are also supporting women in the town of Meki to learn skills and gain financial independence by providing access to vocational training, which can help them secure employment or start their own businesses. This critical mission work is carried out by Maria, a lay missionary who dedicates her life to creating hope for the futures of women in vulnerable situations.
Thousands of women in Ethiopia are compelled by poverty to find domestic work abroad. With hopes of a better life, they make the move away from their homes and their families, only to find themselves caught in a cycle of abuse and exploitation.
After visiting families in the remote town of Meki, lay missionary, Maria Jose Morales, was exposed to this reality.
Inspired by their stories, Maria was called to give back and opened the Kidist Mariam Centre.
Established to provide a safe, supportive and educational environment, the Centre has seen nearly 3,000 women complete training courses and build brighter futures for themselves and their families.
Learn more about the missionary work of Maria and the experiences of women in Meki, Ethiopia in the video below.
“I think without this Centre, we would be out on the street… there was no alternative”.
Saba*
(student at The Kidist Mariam Centre)
Keeping the Kidist Mariam Centre running means Maria can continue reaching out to women, providing them with local opportunities to secure a future and minimise their risk of exploitation.
Your response can make a difference to the lives of women like Saba and help further the work of missionaries like Maria.
Will you walk with Maria as she walks with the women she serves?
